beauty prep for your Chicago boudoir shoot
Chicago boudoir and bridal boudoir beauty prep tips.
A boudoir session is more than lingerie and a gorgeous studio—it's about feeling confident and radiant.
As a Chicago boudoir photographer, one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that the smallest beauty details often make the biggest difference. A fresh manicure, healthy skin, beautifully styled hair, and makeup that feels like you all work together to create photographs you'll treasure for years.
Whether you're surprising your fiancé with a luxurious wedding gift or celebrating this exciting season of life, this guide will help you prepare with confidence. Please consider the following your Ultimate Boudoir Beauty Prep Guide.
Four Weeks Before Your Boudoir Session
Now is the perfect time to begin focusing on your skin and overall wellness. Focus on prioritizing healthy skin. Hydrated, healthy skin always photographs beautifully.
A few simple habits can make a noticeable difference:
Drink plenty of water.
Moisturize daily.
Wear SPF when outdoors.
Avoid trying new skincare products right before your session.
Stay consistent with your normal routine.
If you're considering professional skincare treatments such as facials or light chemical peels, schedule them several weeks before your session so your skin has time to fully recover.
TWO TO THREE WEEKS BEFORE
If you color your hair, aim to have your appointment about two weeks before your session. This gives your color time to settle while keeping roots fresh.
Now is also a great time for:
A trim
Bang maintenance
Avoid making dramatic hairstyle changes immediately before your shoot unless you're absolutely certain you'll love the result.
One Week Before
Waxing & Brow Appointments. If you wax regularly, schedule appointments about one week beforehand.
This gives your skin plenty of time to calm and minimizes redness.
Consider:
Eyebrows
Bikini line
Legs
Underarms
Lip or chin (if applicable)
If you've never waxed before, your boudoir session is not the ideal time to experiment.
Three Days Before
Spray Tan Timing Matters. A beautiful spray tan can add warmth and dimension to your skin—but timing is everything.
For most clients, 2–3 days before your boudoir session is ideal.
This allows:
the color to fully develop,
the initial bronzer to rinse away,
and any areas needing touch-ups to be addressed before your shoot.
Choose a natural-looking shade that complements your skin tone rather than going dramatically darker.
Remember: A subtle glow photographs far better than an overly dark tan.
Two Days Before
Your Hair & Makeup Trial (or Beauty Prep). Professional hair and makeup can make an incredible difference because it's specifically designed to photograph beautifully. Pro tip: It’s smart to try and schedule your boudoir shoot the same day you’ve scheduled your hair and makeup preview appointment (if possible).
If you're working with a professional artist, communicate:
the overall mood you're hoping to achieve,
hairstyles you love,
makeup inspiration,
and features you'd like emphasized.
Think timeless rather than trendy. Soft waves, romantic updos, glowing skin, and elegant makeup tend to remain beautiful for years to come. Note: I prefer soft waves, with hair down whenever possible for your boudoir shoot so please keep that in mind with your artist. This style of hair is more sensual and provides movement for your boudoir shoot. I’m keen on fabric and hair movement at Amelie Boudoir.
Manicures and Pedicures: Your hands and feet appear in more photos than you might expect. From adjusting lingerie to holding your veil or engagement ring, manicured nails help complete the overall look.
Classic favorites include:
Soft blush
Nude
French manicure
Milky white
Pale pink
Taupe
Neutral shades complement nearly every outfit and won't distract from your photographs.
The Night Before
Now is not the time to make major beauty changes.
Instead:
Drink lots of water.
Moisturize.
Steam or gently iron your wardrobe.
Pack your outfits.
Remove price tags.
Charge your phone.
Get a good night's sleep.
Confidence begins with feeling rested.
What to Avoid Before Your Session
A few things are best avoided during the days leading up to your shoot.
Skip:
Trying new skincare products
Aggressive facials
Chemical peels
Excessive sun exposure
Last-minute haircuts
DIY hair color
New makeup brands you've never worn
Tight clothing immediately before your session (it can leave marks on your skin)
The goal is consistency—not surprises. One of the best ways to reduce stress before your boudoir session is to surround yourself with professionals you trust.
Consider building your own beauty team that may include:
A professional hair stylist
A makeup artist
A spray tan specialist
An aesthetician or skincare professional
Working with experienced beauty professionals allows you to relax and enjoy the experience while feeling your absolute best.
At Amélie Boudoir, I love connecting clients with talented local beauty professionals who understand how to create polished, camera-ready looks while still helping you feel like yourself.
Confidence Is the Most Beautiful Thing You'll Wear
Perfect hair isn't what makes a photograph memorable. Perfect makeup isn't either.
The most beautiful boudoir photographs capture confidence, joy, anticipation, and the excitement of this once-in-a-lifetime season.
My goal is to guide you every step of the way—from planning and preparation to posing and creating timeless images that celebrate exactly who you are.
I can't wait to help you create something beautiful.
